In 1984 there were still attempts to make the state of Punjab its own country. Sikh militants were meeting and storing arms at the Golden Temple, preparing for an uprising. The Prime Minister ordered the Indian Army to invade the temple. On October 31st 1984 the Assassination of Indra Gandhi by her two Sikh guards sparked the Anti-Sikh Riots. These Riots were instigated by the government authorities and were participated in by the government authorities. People were brutally murdered. Some were flogged to death, some were thrown from rooftops, some were burned alive. The massacre lasted days but its effects lasted years. Over 3000 people died.
