Ashu lived in a well protected government colony. She did not see all of the terrible things that happened. She saw stone throwing on the bricks of her home and deprivation of resources. She saw the betrayal of her friends. She felt fear for her loved ones. Her father was the one in the most danger becuase of the turban he wore. This outward appearance of a Sikh made him more susceptible to the terrible riots. If he left the house he could have been beaten to death. When the riots were over and Ashu’s family was allowed to leave the house the discrimination followed them. The appearance of her father clearly showed that they were Sikh and could have brought danger even after the riots were over.
